PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE
WHAT IS PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE?
Pelvic organ prolapse is what happens when one or more of the pelvic organs drops from their position, usually because the tissue holding them up has been compromised. This can be caused by several factors, including vaginal childbirth, chronic cough or constipation, hysterectomy, aging, and obesity.
This can cause feelings of heaviness and pressure in the vagina or rectum, a bulge (visible or not), pain with penetration, and urinary problems.
Pelvic floor physical therapy cannot regrow or fix the ligaments above the organs and completely reverse the prolapse, but with a more connected and stronger pelvic floor, your organs can be supported better from beneath, minimizing symptoms and helping to avoid surgery.
Just like with orthopedic surgeries, physical therapy (and other conservative treatment options) should be your first stop.
